Illegal fireworks light up night sky, spark fires in Sacramento region
WE’LL START WITH THE BREAKING NEWS. THAT BREAKING NEWS NOW FROM SOUTH SACRAMENTO. THIS IS THE AFTERMATH OF A LARGE GRASS FIRE THAT HAS BEEN BROUGHT OUT OF SOUTH SACRAMENTO. THIS IS THE AFTERMATH OF A LARGE GRASS FIRE THAT HAS BEEN BROUGHT OUT OF THERE FROM WHAT WE CAN ASSUME THAT, FROM THE NUMEROUS FIREWORKS THAT HAVE BEEN GOING OFF IN THE AREA, IT WAS STARTED BY WHAT WE ARE BEING TOLD TO BE AN AIR FIRE. THIS IS AN IMPLIED FIREWORK THAT WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO USE, WE’VE BEEN TOLD FOR THIS REASON. AGAIN, THIS IS HAPPENING NEAR THE DELTA SHORE SHOPPING CENTER IN LEVAR BURTON PARK. THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE WHEN OUR CAMERAS ROLL UP THERE. JUST A LARGE GRASS FIRE. FIRE DEPARTMENTS GET ON THE SCENE, ASSESS THE SITUATION, ALLOW THE FIRE TO BURN OUT IN A CERTAIN SPOT. AND NOW THEY’RE CLEANING UP. YES, THAT VIDEO YOU JUST SAW WAS CAPTURED ABOUT 20 MINUTES AGO. THESE ARE LIVE PHOTOS FROM OUR SACRAMENTO SKY CAM TONIGHT. AND YOU CAN JUST SEE A SERIES OF FIREWORKS GOING OFF IN EVERY DIRECTIONS. THIS IS REALLY KIND OF A BIG AREA OF SOUTH SACRAMENTO. AND KEEP IN MIND AS YOU LOOK AT THIS PHOTO, IT’S FIREWORK AFTER FIREWORK. WE’VE BEEN WATCHING THIS SPECTACULAR SHOW FOR A NUMBER OF HOURS. AND IT’S ONE OF THOSE SITUATIONS WHERE ON THE ONE HAND, YOU KNOW, IT’S IMPRESSIVE. THESE THINGS ARE SOME OF THEIR BIGGER. THEY LOOK LIKE PROFESSIONAL FIREWORKS. AND ON THE OTHER HAND, WE KNOW THEY ARE INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS, ESPECIALLY DURING THIS HEAT WAVE. WE CAN GO OUT TO WEST SACRAMENTO. ANOTHER CAMERA SHOT HERE. SAME THING. MORE ILLEGAL FIREWORKS. STILL GOING OFF. THESE ARE NOT THE FIREWORKS THAT TOOK PLAY AT THE STADIUM WHERE THE RIVER CATS ARE PLAYING. UH, THE FIREWORKS DISPLAY THAT WAS APPROVED WAS AT 9:45. SO THIS IS WELL AFTER THAT. AND YOU CAN SEE THE ILLEGAL LIGHT SHOW THAT IS GOING ON ACROSS A LOT OF OUR VIEWING AREA HERE VIA OUR CAMERAS. BUT YOU CAN SEE SOME OF THEM LOOK LIKE THE SAME KIND OF FIREWORKS THAT YOU WOULD SEE ON THE PROFESSIONAL SHOWS. THEY’RE GOING OFF. YOU KNOW, JUST UP REALLY HIGH IN THE SKY. AND OF COURSE THE 4TH OF JULY IS ALWAYS ONE OF THE BUSIEST NIGHTS FOR FIRE FIGHTERS WHO ARE TACKLING FIRES CAUSED BY FIREWORKS. AND IT’S BEEN A REALLY BUSY NIGHT ALREADY. YES, WE CAN SHOW YOU NEW VIDEOS OF A GRASS FIRE THAT BROKE OUT IN ELVERTA. THE CREWS SAY IT WAS SPREAD BY FIREWORKS THAT WERE GOING OFF IN THE AREA. WE SAW A COUPLE OF THEM LYING ON THE GROUND AND THIS ALL STARTED OFF GREAT, THERE THEY ARE, THERE. THIS STARTED ALONG TAN WOODS ROAD AND YOU CAN SEE THE REACTION OUT THERE. AND NOW THE GROUND TEAMS ARE OUT THERE AND THEY FOUND FIRE ON THE GROUND AND THEY WENT AROUND THIS FIRE AND WERE EXTINGUISHING IT. FIREWORKS HAVE ALSO BEEN BLAMED FOR CAUSING A GRASS FIRE IN RIO LINDA. THIS WAS TODAY AT ELECTRIC AVENUE AND DELANO STREET. THIS BURNED DIRECTLY ALONG A BIKE PATH AND PROPERTY. SAC METRO FIRE TELL US THE FIRE BURNED A FENCE AND A VEHICLE. THE PROPERTY ASSISTANT TELL US SHE ARRIVED WHEN SHE SAW THIS FIRE. I DIDN’T SEE HOW OR WHO BUT I JUST INSTINCTIVELY DID IT AND GRAB THE WATER HOSES. BY THIS TIME THE NEIGHBOR WAS ALREADY HERE FROM THE OTHER SIDE WITH THEIR HOSE OUT AND WENT BACK LIVE TO OUR SKYCAM DOWNTOWN. THIS LOOKS LIKE SOUTH OF DOWNTOWN SACRAMENTO WHERE WE WATCHED A LOT OF THESE ILLEGAL FIREWORKS TONIGHT. THEY’VE BEEN GOING ON FOR HOURS. THESE ARE BIG FIREWORKS. EACH ONE OF THEM IS A POTENTIAL HAZARD BECAUSE OF THE DRY CONDITIONS WE’RE HAVING WITH SO MUCH DRY FUEL ON THE GROUND. THOSE FIREWORKS ARE NOW AFFECTING OUR AIR QUALITY AS WELL. YES WE CAN SEE IT. OUR METEOROLOGISTS HEATHER WALDMAN HAS BEEN MONITORING THESE CHANGES. YOU KNOW, SURE, BECAUSE THE FIREWORKS HAVE BEEN GOING ON FOR HOURS. YES. IT WAS A BIT SHOCKING TO SEE AT FIRST. BUT IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT, IT REALLY SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN JUST GIVEN THE AMOUNT OF FIREWORKS THAT WE’VE SEEN AND HOW LONG THEY’VE BEEN GOING ON. SO I HAVE OUR MAP HERE, ZOOMED IN ON DOWNTOWN SACRAMENTO. THIS IS THE MIDTOWN REGION HERE, TAHOE PARK, CURTIS PARK, RIGHT HERE WHERE YOU SEE THESE ORANGE DOTS. THAT’S WHAT REPRESENTS THE AIR QUALITY. THAT’S IN THE UNHEALTHY RANGE. IF YOU GO EAST ON THE 50 OR ON THE 80, YOU’RE GOING TO GET INTO THAT BAD AIR TOO, TOWARDS RANCHO CORDOVA. THAT DOESN’T MEAN THAT PEOPLE ARE IN THE POCKET OF WEST SACRAMENTO AND ARE DONE WITH THEIR FIREWORKS. WHAT’S GOING ON IS THERE’S A WEST WIND. SO ALL THE SMOKE PARTICLES ARE GETTING PUSHED UP INTO THE HILLS. THAT’S WHAT’S GOING ON IN SACRAMENTO COUNTY. BUT I’M GOING TO TAKE THE MAP OUT SO YOU CAN SEE THIS IS YUBA CITY. MAYBE THERE’S FIREWORKS ACTIVITY SOUTHWARD INTO STOCKTON. THOSE ARE THESE DOTS RIGHT HERE. THERE MAY HAVE BEEN SOME FIREWORKS THAT WERE NOT SEEN FROM OUR CAMERAS OUT THERE. AND I’M FINISHING UP IN THE SOUTH BAY. SO YOU CAN SEE THERE TOO, THE REDS, EVEN SOME OF THE PURPLE DOTS THAT REPRESENT THAT UNSAFE OR EVEN DANGEROUS AIR QUALITY. LUCKILY WE HAVE ANOTHER WINDBLOW TONIGHT. IT’S NOT STRONG, BUT IT SHOULD BE ENOUGH TO HOPEFULLY MAKE SOME OF THIS DISAPPEAR AS WE GO THROUGH THE NIGHT HOURS AND HOPEFULLY THE AIR QUALITY WOULD HAVE AT LEAST IMPROVED A LITTLE AS WE

Every year on the Fourth of July, the skies in parts of Northern California light up with illegal fireworks displays. Some of the fireworks displays were caught by KCRA 3’s skycam before the sun had fully set. On the ground, it was easier to see the dangers of illegal fireworks during a dry heat wave. KCRA 3 had several news crews and photographers in the area, who were able to see a large number of illegal fireworks being set off. At one point, our photographer near Delta Shores in southern Sacramento captured a fire that appeared to have started in an area where multiple illegal fireworks displays were being set off. The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District and other departments in Northern California were busy on the Fourth of July. KCRA 3’s Lee Anne Denyer rode along with Sac Metro Fire as firefighters responded to numerous calls. A grass fire in Elverta was also confirmed to have been caused by illegal fireworks. Denyer said that fireworks debris was scattered across the ground as a nearby field burned. See more coverage of breaking California stories here | Download our app.
